Increments of Random Partitions

چکیده

For any partition of {1, 2, . . . , n} we define its increments Xi, 1 ≤ i ≤ n by Xi = 1 if i is the smallest element in the partition block that contains it, Xi = 0 otherwise. We prove that for partially exchangeable random partitions (where the probability of a partition depends only on its block sizes in order of appearance), the law of the increments uniquely determines the law of the partition. One consequence is that the Chinese Restaurant Process CRP(θ) (the partition with distribution given by the Ewens sampling formula with parameter θ) is the only exchangeable random partition with independent increments.

Probabilistic number theory and random permutations: Functional limit theory

The ideas from Probabilistic Number Theory are useful in the study of measures on partitions of integers. Connection between the Ewens sampling formula in population genetics and the partitions of an integer generated by random permutations will be discussed. Functional limit theory for partial sum processes induced by Ewens sampling formula is reviewed. The results on limit processes with depe...

Poisson - Kingman Partitions ∗ Jim Pitman

This paper presents some general formulas for random partitions of a finite set derived by Kingman’s model of random sampling from an interval partition generated by subintervals whose lengths are the points of a Poisson point process. These lengths can be also interpreted as the jumps of a subordinator, that is an increasing process with stationary independent increments. Examples include the ...

Eternal Additive Coalescents and Certain Bridges with Exchangeable Increments

Aldous and Pitman have studied the asymptotic behavior of the additive coalescent processes using a nested family random forests derived by logging certain inhomogeneous continuum random trees. Here we propose a different approach based on partitions of the unit interval induced by certain bridges with exchangeable increments. The analysis is made simple by an interpretation in terms of an aggr...
